13 Free Grim Reaper Crochet Patterns for a Spooky Halloween

The Grim Reaper may be one of Halloween’s creepiest characters, but apparently all it takes is a crochet hook and some yarn to make Death surprisingly adorable. 💀🖤

If you’re looking for a free Grim Reaper crochet pattern, I’ve collected 13 different projects for you to try.

You’ll find tiny Grim Reaper amigurumi, beginner-friendly dolls, chunky plush Reapers, keychains, spooky Halloween decorations, and even a full-size Grim Reaper crochet blanket.

Some are cute.

Some are creepy.

And a few somehow manage to be both.

Whether you want a quick Halloween project or a large statement blanket, grab your black yarn and let’s crochet something spooky.

1. FREE Grim Reaper Crochet Blanket Pattern – Pretty Things By Katja

I’m starting with my own Free Grim Reaper Crochet Blanket Pattern, because this one is completely different from the amigurumi projects in the rest of the collection.

Instead of making a small Grim Reaper doll, you can crochet an entire spooky blanket featuring a dramatic hooded skeleton against a deep purple background.

The pattern uses the Single Crochet graphghan/tapestry crochet technique and measures 200 stitches × 200 rows. It uses four colors — purple, black, red, and white — and includes both a full-color graph and written row-by-row instructions. Pretty Things By Katja

With #3 yarn, the approximate finished size is 32 × 42 inches (80 × 105 cm). With #4 yarn, it can grow to approximately 66 × 53 inches (166 × 134 cm), depending on your yarn, hook, gauge, and crochet tension. Pretty Things By Katja

This would make an amazing project for:

Halloween home décor, gothic bedrooms, horror fans, spooky movie nights, wall hangings, or anyone who wants a Halloween crochet project considerably larger than an amigurumi.

And yes — the pattern is completely free.

2. Grim Reaper Amigurumi – StringyDingDing

If you prefer your Grim Reaper on the cute side, this little guy from StringyDingDing is a great place to start.

The finished amigurumi is approximately 6 inches tall and is rated as an easy crochet project. It uses medium-weight yarn and features a skull face, black robe, hood, and tiny scythe. The hood can even be worn up or down. StringyDingDing

I also love the designer’s suggestion of changing the robe color. Who says the Grim Reaper has to wear black? A pink or purple Reaper would be wonderfully ridiculous in the best possible way.

The full written pattern is available free on the website, with an optional printable PDF available separately.

3. Mini Grim Reaper – Supergurumi

This little Reaper from Supergurumi is perfect when you want a tiny Halloween project rather than another full-size plush.

The free online pattern uses sport-weight cotton yarn, a 2.5 mm crochet hook, safety eyes, and the traditional Grim Reaper palette of black, white, brown, and gray. Techniques include single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, increases, decreases, and working in the front and back loops. Supergurumi

Because the finished Reaper is so small, it works beautifully as a Halloween decoration, little desk companion, gift, or keychain.

The written pattern can be followed free on the Supergurumi website; the printable PDF is optional.

4. Mini Grim Reaper Amigurumi – Little Crochet Farm

Here’s another tiny Reaper, but this one is especially nice if you’re fairly new to amigurumi.

Little Crochet Farm’s Mini Grim Reaper Amigurumi is beginner-friendly and comes with both a free written pattern and a step-by-step video tutorial. The designer uses sport-weight cotton yarn and a 2 mm crochet hook, and the finished character is approximately 3 inches tall. Little Crochet Farm

It’s small enough to finish fairly quickly and would look adorable tucked into a Halloween display with crocheted pumpkins, ghosts, and black cats.

5. Grim Reaper Pocket Pet – Virkadia

I really like this one because it has a slightly different construction from the usual cute Reaper doll.

The Grim Reaper Pocket Pet is part of Virkadia’s Halloween Pocket Pets collection and includes the classic dark robe and skull imagery in a compact amigurumi design. The free pattern includes detailed written instructions and links to additional stitch and amigurumi technique tutorials. Virkadia

One of the fun details is the removable-looking skull/head construction, which gives the finished character a little extra personality.

This is a good option if you already have some amigurumi experience and want something slightly more involved.

6. The Grim Reaper – monchoudesigns

This free Ribblr pattern creates a Grim Reaper approximately 6 inches tall.

The pattern is listed around advanced-beginner/intermediate level and combines basic amigurumi construction with a detailed scythe. It uses single crochet for the Reaper and additional stitches including half double, double, and treble crochet for the scythe. Ribblr

Because Ribblr patterns are interactive, you can follow the project row by row rather than downloading a traditional PDF.

It’s a nice next step if you’ve already crocheted a few simple amigurumi projects and want something with a little more detail.

7. Reapie the Grim Reaper

Meet Reapie — a tiny original character dressed up as the Grim Reaper.

This pattern by Lyn Crochet Journal is listed as beginner-friendly and is available free through Ribblr. It uses sport-weight yarn and is written in both US and UK crochet terminology through Ribblr’s interactive format. Ribblr

Reapie is more cute than frightening, which makes this one perfect if your Halloween decorating style involves more adorable ghosts than terrifying monsters.

I also think this would make a very sweet handmade Halloween gift.

8. Theodore the Grim Reaper

Apparently the Grim Reaper can also be squishy. 😄

Theodore the Grim Reaper, designed by Blackbird, is a chunky amigurumi project made with plush-style yarn. The free Ribblr pattern is rated intermediate and creates a much softer, cuddlier version of the traditionally terrifying character. Ribblr

This one adds some nice variety to the collection because plush yarn gives the finished Reaper a completely different look from the smaller cotton amigurumi.

If you like big, soft Halloween plushies, Theodore may be your Reaper.

9. Da Gwim Weaper – Akabeko Botan

The name alone earned this one a place in the roundup. 😂

Da Gwim Weaper takes an especially funny approach to the classic character: there is no face inside the hood at all.

That means no safety eyes and no fiddly facial embroidery. Instead, you get a mysterious empty hood — which somehow makes the little character both cuter and creepier.

The pattern uses DK yarn and a 3.5 mm hook and is available as a free Ravelry download. Ravelry

This is probably one of the most unusual Grim Reaper amigurumi patterns in the whole collection.

10. Halloween Grim Reaper – Yeezhee

This free Grim Reaper crochet pattern from Yeezhee has the traditional black-cloak-and-scythe look with a fun Halloween detail on the back.

The character is crocheted in separate sections for the body, head, arms, and scythe. The designer recommends a 3.5 or 3.75 mm crochet hook and provides the complete written pattern online using US crochet terminology. Yeezhee

The design also includes a spiderweb detail, which makes it feel especially suited to Halloween decorating.

If you want a classic spooky Reaper without making something enormous, this is a good option.

11. Grim Reaper Crochet Keychain – DoodabsDesigns

Need something you can finish considerably faster than a 200 × 200 blanket? 😅

This Grim Reaper Keychain is a free video pattern from Crochet DoodabsDesigns and measures only about 1½ × 2 inches when finished.

The tutorial uses DK-weight yarn, 3 mm and 2.5 mm hooks, stuffing, and a keychain fob. The designer describes it as beginner-friendly. YouTube

It would make a fun Halloween keychain, handbag charm, backpack decoration, or small handmade gift.

And because it uses such small amounts of yarn, this is a great scrap-yarn project too.

12. Tiny Grim Reaper Amigurumi – ruangkece

This little Grim Reaper measures approximately 8 cm tall, making it another great choice for a keychain, desk decoration, or quick Halloween project.

The pattern uses DK yarn and US crochet terminology, and the designer describes it as suitable for beginners because of the small size and straightforward construction. A paid PDF is available, but the designer also provides a free video version through their YouTube channel. Ravelry

It’s another good option if you want something you can finish without committing to a large project.

13. Free Grim Reaper Amigurumi – Top Amigurumi

Last but not least is another classic hooded Grim Reaper complete with skull face, flowing robe, and curved scythe.

The free pattern is worked mainly in continuous rounds using standard amigurumi techniques such as single crochet, increases, decreases, and front- and back-loop stitches.

Depending on yarn and hook size, the standard version measures roughly 12–16 cm tall, and the designer also explains how to scale it down into a smaller version. TopAmigurumi

This is a nice choice if you want a traditional Grim Reaper amigurumi that can be customized into different sizes.

Which Grim Reaper Crochet Pattern Will You Make?

I genuinely did not expect the Grim Reaper to have quite this many personalities.

In this collection alone, Death can be tiny, chunky, kawaii, faceless, pocket-sized, hanging from your keys, or stretched across an entire crochet blanket.

If you want a quick project, one of the tiny amigurumi or keychain patterns would be perfect.

If you want something a little more dramatic, start with my FREE Grim Reaper Crochet Blanket Pattern and turn the Reaper into a full-size Halloween graphghan.

Either way, black yarn is probably going to be involved. A lot of black yarn. 😂

What Yarn Colors Do You Need for a Grim Reaper?

Most Grim Reaper crochet patterns use a very simple Halloween color palette.

Black is usually used for the hood and robe, while white or cream works for the skull. Brown is commonly used for the scythe handle, with gray or silver for the blade.

But there is absolutely no rule saying your Grim Reaper has to look traditional.

Try purple, deep burgundy, dark green, hot pink, or even pastel Halloween colors.

A pink Grim Reaper may not be particularly intimidating, but I would absolutely love to see one.

Are Grim Reaper Crochet Patterns Beginner-Friendly?

Several of the amigurumi patterns in this collection are designed for beginners or advanced beginners.

If you already know how to make a magic ring, single crochet, increase, decrease, and sew amigurumi pieces together, you should have several options here.

The larger Grim Reaper graphghan blanket uses basic single crochet stitches, but the challenge is managing color changes and following the graph row by row. You can find a lot of helpful video tutorials on how to do tapestry crochet on my blog here.

So if you are brand new to crochet, start small.

If you are comfortable with crochet graphs and tapestry crochet, go big. 💀

What Can You Make With a Grim Reaper Crochet Pattern?

A Grim Reaper doesn’t have to become only a stuffed toy.

Depending on the pattern, you can create Halloween blankets, wall hangings, keychains, bag charms, desk decorations, plushies, gothic bedroom décor, seasonal displays, or handmade gifts for horror lovers.

And honestly, a tiny Grim Reaper sitting beside a crocheted pumpkin sounds like a very reasonable Halloween decoration to me.
