Baby Loss Awareness Crochet Patterns

Baby Loss Awareness Crochet Patterns (+FREE Pattern)

Many people are probably not aware, but October is also Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month.

There is a stigma around pregnancy and infant loss, and many families feel isolated in their grief. One in four women will experience this type of loss in their lifetime, so we know they are not alone.

Tens of thousands of families across the United States are devastated each year by the death of their baby. But the grief of these families and the value of their babies’ lives are very rarely acknowledged. In 1988, US President Ronald Reagan declared October as a month to recognize bereaved parents’ unique grief to demonstrate support to the many families who have suffered such a tragic loss.

Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day is commemorated on the 15th of October of each year, in Canada, United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Australian States of Western Australia, New South Wales, New Zealand, Italy, Ireland, Denmark, France, Norway, Kenya, Latin America, Central America, South America, Russia, Germany, South Africa, Japan, China, and Kyrgyzstan; more countries join in each year, officially or otherwise.

Promoting awareness of pregnancy and infant loss increases the likelihood that grieving families will receive understanding and support and improve education and prevention efforts, which may ultimately reduce the incidence of these tragedies.Baby Loss Awareness Month - Free Crochet Awareness Ribbon Pattern

I must admit it was hard for me to write this post. A few of my friends have lost their babies during pregnancy, some at the beginning, and one on the day of birth. I am also pregnant right now, so it is emotional to think about this. I wanted to do something special to honor all the grieving families and all the babies in heaven.

I modified the Pink Ribbon Awareness pattern and turned it into a blue and pink ribbon to represent Baby Loss Awareness Ribbon. You can download it for free at the end of the post. I have also created a few Angel Baby Blanket Patterns that you can find in my Etsy shop PrettyThingsByKatja. I will show them below.Free Baby Loss Awareness - PDF Download Crochet Pattern

In October, and always, we honor all babies amongst the stars.

Baby Loss Awareness Week takes place on 9-15th October. During this week, families worldwide commemorate their babies’ lives and share memories of the all too brief time they had together. It’s a special opportunity to mark the lives of babies lost in pregnancy, at birth or soon after birth (stillbirth, miscarriage, SIDS, or any other cause at any point during pregnancy or infancy).

At the end of the week, on the 15th of October on World Pregnancy & Infant Loss Remembrance Day, you may like to participate in the International Wave of Light. People worldwide light a candle or candles at 7 pm in memory of the baby or babies they have lost. Photos of these candles on social media create a wave of light that spreads across the globe. You can join this virtual wave of light by adding your photo at 7 pm (every timezone) with the tag #WaveofLight.

Use #NeverBeStill, #BecauseEveryPregnancyDeservesAHappyEnding to show your support for grieving families and to honor babies gone too soon.

Here are the patterns I’ve made.

I hope you liked them. I was trying to weave in extra love and care with the intention that the image and quote would help bring some peace to the grieving families and honor the memory of their little angel.

You can find all the patterns in my Etsy Shop, Pretty Things By Katja. Right now, I have the Awareness Patterns 20% off, but you can use the discount code: BESTOFCROCHET and get 20% off on all of my patterns.

This is a Tapestry Crochet Blanket and Pillow Pattern. If you decide to make a pillow, I would suggest using a 3.00mm Crochet Hook (D hook) and a #3 DK/Light Worsted Yarn. The size of the cushion will be (according to my gauge) 11″ x 18″ (27 x 45cm) Rectangle. If you want to make a blanket, I suggest a bigger yarn and hook, and you will get a bigger blanket.

Awareness isn’t limited to October, and it isn’t limited to groups that recognize October as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month.

No two grieving people are the same. Every single person grieves differently. I am sending all of the families with angel babies a big hug and a lot of love. There are no words to make you feel better.

Little by little, we let go of loss, but never the love. <3
