There’s still so much that we don’t know about cats. From the unusual way they walk to how big the largest cat is, I bet you haven’t heard some of these fun facts!
In America, most people have a pet. There are more pets than children. About 90 percent (some polls indicate over 90 percent) of pet owners consider their pets members of the family. Yet, according to the ASPCA, approximately 2.7 million animals are euthanized at shelters each year (1.2 million dogs and 1.4 million cats).
According to a GfK SE survey (Gesellschaft für Konsumforschung orSociety for Consumer Research) published in Petfood Industry.com,
- Globally, 57 percent of consumers own pets (according to more than 27,000 online consumers whom GfK surveyed in 22 countries).
- Dogs are the most popular pet globally, owned by 33 percent of respondents, with cats next at 23 percent. The listing continues fish (12 percent), birds (six percent), and other pet types (six percent).
- Argentina (82 percent), Mexico (81 percent), and Brazil (76 percent) have the highest rates of overall pet ownership among the 22 countries surveyed, with dogs being the most popular pet in all three nations. The countries included are Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Poland, Russia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, UK, and the USA.
- The US ranks fifth for pet ownership and third when it comes to owning cats. Almost three-quarters (70 percent) of US consumers have at least one pet, with 50 percent owning dogs and 39 percent cats.
- The American Pet Products Association (APPA) found that 68 percent of US households owned some sort of pet in 2016. Among those pets were about 90 million dogs and 94 million cats, the group said. (Some of these seemingly conflicting numbers can be explained by slicing and dicing. For example, there are likely more households with dogs than cats, but more cats per home.)
- Germany has the most cats in Europe. According to cat statistics from 2018, France is second with 13.5 million cats, and the UK with 7.5 million is ranked third.
According to Live Science (and others), 2013, the most popular pets in the world:
- 142 million freshwater fish
- 88.3 million cats
- 74.8 million dogs
- 16 million birds
- 24.3 million small animals
- 13.8 million horses
- 13.4 million reptiles
- 9.6 million saltwater fish
You may love your cat, but you may not be fully aware of just how cool her species really is. For example, did you know that cats have an extra organ that allows them to taste scents? Or that they developed meowing as a way to communicate exclusively with humans?
I have pulled together a list of the most amusing cat facts that you can share with your friends and family.
Fun facts about cats
- The oldest known pet cat existed 9,500 years ago. Did you know that originally it was thought that Egyptians domesticated the cat? But in 2004, French archaeologists discovered a 9,500-year-old cat grave in Cyprus. This makes this the oldest known pet cat, and it predates Egyptian art about cats by over 4,000 years!
- Cats spend 70% of their lives sleeping, which works out to around 13-16 hours a day. It’s a cat’s life!
- The record for the longest cat ever is 48.5 inches (123cm). Did you know the world’s longest cat was a Maine Coon called Stewie and was measured at 48.5 inches? Whereas, the record for the tallest cat belonged to Arcturus at a whopping 19.05 inches (48,4cm) tall! Those are some big cats.
- Cats walk like camels and giraffes. Their walking sequence is both right feet first, followed by both left feet, so they move half of their body forward at once. Camels and giraffes are the only other animals to walk this way.
- Isaac Newton invented the cat door. The scientist is most famous for calculated gravity, but it’s also believed that Isaac Newton invented the cat door. How Stuff Works writes that when Newton was working on his experiments at the University of Cambridge, he was constantly interrupted by his cats scratching at the door. So he called the Cambridge carpenter to saw two holes in the door, one for the mother cat and one for her kittens! These holes can still be seen at the university today.
- According to Ancient History Encyclopedia, Herodotus wrote in 440BC that when a pet cat died in Ancient Egyptian times, the family members would shave off their eyebrows in mourning. Now that’s an interesting cat fact!
- A house cat can reach speeds of up to 30mph, which is so fast that they could beat Usain Bolt in a 200-meter dash!
- The oldest cat in the world was 38 years old! The average lifespan of an indoor cat is 15 years. His owner Jake Perry also owned the previous oldest cat record holder, Grandpa Rex Allen, who passed away at the grand age of 34! Whatever Jake Perry’s doing, he’s doing it right!
- The record for the loudest purr by a domestic cat is currently held by Merlin, a black and white cat from Torquay, UK. His purr is 67.8db(A), and for context, this is nearly the same volume as a shower! Most cats purr at around 25db.
- A cat’s purr vibrates at a frequency of 25 to 150 hertz, which is the same frequency at which muscles and bones repair themselves.
- Cats have an extra organ that allows them to taste scents on the air, which is why your cat stares at you with her mouth open from time to time.
- Cats use their long tails to balance themselves when they’re jumping or to walk along narrow ledges.
- Cats use their whiskers to “feel” the world around them to determine which small spaces they can fit into. A cat’s whiskers are generally about the same width as its body. (This is why you should never, EVER cut their whiskers – ALWAYS leave them intact.)
- Cats can spend up to a third of their waking hours grooming.
Female cats have the ability to get pregnant when they are only 4 months old! A cat can have as many as 12 kittens in just one year.
If they aren’t neutered or spayed, one female cat and her offspring can produce up to 420,000 more cats in seven years.
3.2 million cats enter animal shelters every year, and approximately 860,000 cats are euthanized every year.
Kittens can be spayed or neutered when they are only eight weeks old. If possible, these procedures should be performed in the first 5 months of your cat’s life.
Male cats who have been fixed need fewer calories to maintain their weight.
Spaying and neutering can extend a cat’s life. The Banfield Pet Hospital study found that neutered males live an average of 62 percent longer than unneutered cats and spayed females live an average of 39 percent longer than unspayed cats.
Despite popular belief, many cats are actually lactose intolerant. Grapes and raisins, as well as onions, garlic, and chives, are all extremely harmful foods for cats. Grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure — although the reasoning behind that isn’t clear. Meanwhile, onions, garlic, and chives wreak havoc on your cat’s gastrointestinal system and can cause anemia.
Cats are responsible for the decline of 27 mammal species. Outdoor cats are believed to be the biggest human-caused threat to wildlife, impacting the reduction or extinction of 123 bird species on islands, ranging from songbirds to penguins. Stray and feral cat stats also show that they have contributed to the decline in the number of 25 species of reptiles.
When it comes to one of the world’s most popular pets, what can we learn from the cat statistics that we don’t already know? A lot, it turns out. Cats are mysterious creatures that never cease to amaze us. Maybe that’s one of the reasons humans love them so much.
- Significantly more cats are allowed to sleep in their owner’s bed, as opposed to 39% of dogs. In terms of furniture, 70% of felines have permission to lie on sofas. However, statistics show that only 40% of canines enjoy the same rights.
- A cat with a question-mark-shaped tail is asking, “Want to play?”
- According to Wilde, a slow blink is a “kitty kiss.” This movement shows contentment and trust.
- Cats have up to 100 different vocalizations — dogs only have 10. They also have a unique “vocabulary” with their owner — each cat has a different set of vocalizations, purrs, and behaviors.
- Cats find it threatening when you make direct eye contact with them.
- Cats mark you as their territory when they rub their faces and bodies against you, as they have scent glands in those areas.
- If your cat approaches you with a straight, almost vibrating tail, this means that she is extremely happy to see you.
- When your cat sticks his butt in your face, he is doing so as a gesture of friendship.
- Whiskers are also good indicators of a cat’s mood. When a cat is scared, he put his whiskers back. But when a cat is in hunting mode, he puts his whiskers forward.
- Your cat drapes its tail over another cat, your dog, or you as a symbol of friendship.
- A cat’s learning style is about the same as a 2- to 3-year-old child.
- Cats were first brought to the Americas in colonial times to get rid of rodents.
- Each cat’s nose print is unique, much like human fingerprints.
- The first known cat video was recorded in 1894. And when it comes to cats on the Internet, statistics clearly show their ruthless dominance. CNN reported that in 2015 there were approximately 6.5 billion cat pictures on the Internet—nearly one for every person on Earth. Also, in 2015, there were more than 2 million cat videos uploaded on YouTube, which gathered over 25 billion views combined. Their average of 12,000 views per video is the highest of any YouTube category.
- 66% of US pet owners define their pets as their “best friend.” 25% of respondents in a 2016 survey said they consider their pet to be like a therapist. Not surprising, as 75% of owners state that their fur-friend can sense when they’re sad and helps them feel better.
- It is difficult to determine just how many cat breeds there are due to different classification methods and the fact that new breeds are constantly being developed. While the Cat Fanciers’ Association recognizes 44 cat breeds, the biggest cat registry in the world—the International Cat Association—recognizes 71 different breeds.
Did any of these facts surprise you? There’s a reason the cat statistics show that felines are one of the most popular pets in the world. From ruling the Internet to simply running the house, cats have managed to capture the hearts of everyone who comes into contact with them.
