Did you know that according to Etsy 2019 trend report, unicorns are not the internet’s favorite animal anymore? According to the handmade and vintage goods online marketplace’s predictions, sloths are the new unicorns.

“Shoppers and Etsy sellers alike have gravitated to the laid-back attitude of the sloth, real-life representation of the carefree lifestyle many of us strive for every day,” observes the site.

Everyone seems to be fascinated with sloths. The slow-moving animals native to Central and South America are one of the most popular animals at zoos. They have even been featured in Disney movies and Geico commercials.

Actress Kristen Bell’s encounter with a sloth went viral when her husband, Dax Shepard, surprised her by bringing one to her birthday party.

As a trend, sloths are by no means new, of course; indeed, Etsy notes that they’ve “slowly been on the rise since 2002 (thanks to characters in popular animated movies).” Etsy’s trend report is probably referring to both Ice Age’s ground sloth, Sid (the first Ice Age debuted in 2002). However, I think that sloths’ rise in popularity is also due to their meme-fication.
